Saint Astvatsatsin Church of Areni
Areni, Armenia
Cultural Treasure
Overlooking the village of Areni on the eastern bank of the river Arpa lies the Saint Astvatsatsin Church. With views of the church at nearly every spot in the valley, this structure has watched over the “land of wine” since its construction in 1321 AD. A resemblance can be made with the nearby, and much more famous, Norovank Monastery, thanks to the same architect who designed the iconic structures: Momik. Momik gained fame for his high relief carvings, such as found on khachkars near the church and on the outside of the main structure. Also as architect, the church, alongside Noravank, have a distinctive, yet proudly Armenian, appearance with its thin yet tall stones stretching to the heavens.
