THE PORT WHERE ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROME

Paul's journey to Puteoli (modern-day Pozzuoli) represents a significant moment in early Christian history, as this ancient port city served as his first foothold on Italian soil. Located in the Bay of Naples, Puteoli was one of the most important commercial ports in the Roman Empire during the 1st century AD.

According to Acts 28:13-14, Paul arrived in Puteoli after sailing from Rhegium: "From there we set sail and arrived at Puteoli. There we found some brothers and sisters who invited us to spend a week with them." This seemingly simple account actually reveals several important aspects of both the city and Paul's experience.

The Puteoli that Paul would have encountered was a cosmopolitan metropolis, second only to Rome in commercial importance in Italy. The port received ships from all over the Mediterranean, particularly from Alexandria. Its streets would have been filled with sailors, merchants, and travelers from across the empire, speaking various languages and practicing different religions. The city featured impressive Roman architecture, including the amphitheater (which still stands today), temples, and warehouses for storing grain and other goods. As a prisoner, Paul would have witnessed the city's busy port activities from a unique perspective. The loading and unloading of ships, the cries of merchants, the smell of exotic spices, and the sight of grain being transferred from massive Alexandrian ships would have been part of his daily experience. The volcanic activity in the area, with the nearby Solfatara crater constantly emitting sulfurous fumes, would have added another distinctive element to his stay. The presence of a Christian community in Puteoli is particularly noteworthy. Given the city's commercial importance and connections with the eastern Mediterranean, it's likely that Christianity had reached there through merchants and travelers before Paul's arrival. The week-long stay would have given Paul valuable opportunities to strengthen this community through teaching and encouragement, even as he prepared for his final journey to Rome.

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF A PRISONER

Paul arrived in Puteoli as a prisoner, being transported to Rome for trial before Caesar. Despite his prisoner status, Acts indicates he was granted considerable freedom under the supervision of his Roman guard, Julius, who had shown him favor throughout the journey. This relative freedom allowed Paul to accept the local Christians' invitation to stay for a week, suggesting there was already an established Christian community in this bustling port city.
