Rabati Malik Caravanserai

Uzbekistan

Silk Road Inn

The Rabati Malik Caravanserai is one of the best-preserved caravanserais, or roadside inns, from the height of the Silk Road trade routes across Central Asia. Located along the Karakum Corridor between Bukhara and Samarkand in Uzbekistan, this enormous walled complex dates back to the 11th century, commissioned by the ruling leader of Samarkand to provide safe lodging for caravans traveling between the two major oasis cities. As one of the most crucial routes along the entirety of the Silk Roads, the secure caravanserai could accommodate hundreds of camels and merchants inside its high mud-brick fortifications.

Following an earthquake in the 1960’s, only the massive front portal remains, though the foundations of animal stables, merchant quarters, and a small mosque could still be made out. Imagine the conversations under this roof, the tales from weary merchants, and the precious goods that passed through.  In 2023, this Caravanserai was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is reached off the modern highway and as of 2024 is free to visit.
